Rogers taking pre-orders for the Xperia X10, launches April 15th
A few weeks ago, Rogers announced that pre-orders would ‘soon’ start for the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, their flagship Android phone. That ‘soon’ is now, at http://www.rogers.com/x10preorder. New customers who pre-order the X10 with a 3 year contract will get a free Sony MW600 Bluetooth Stereo headset and a chance to win two tickets to the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
The headset is an especially nice promo, since online reviews of the MW600 have been very good. The X10 is $149.99 with a 3 year contract, which points to the phone being $599 or $549 with no contract (for those interested in unlocking it and using in on Bellus), and the pre-order promo ends on April 14th. Exisiting Rogers customers can upgrade to the X10 starting on the 15th, and while they cannot enter to win the World Cup tickets, they still qualify for the bluetooth headset if they sign a new 3 year contract.
If you are not familiar with the X10 it is Sony Ericsson’s flagship smartphone, and runs their custom ‘Timescape’ and ‘Mediscape’ UI on top of Android 1.6. It is the first Android phone with a 4″ display, using the same 1Ghz Snapdragon processor as the Nexus 1, HTC HD2 and upcoming HTC Evo. It also features an 8.1Mp camera, and with their history of making stellar camera phones, Sony Ericssons X10 camera should outperform many other Anroid phones (cough, cough, Droid) on the market.
Fortunately for Sony, initial reviews have been positive, as SE’s successes in the smartphone space have been few in recent memory. There were a few issues identified with multi-touch and the keyboard. Hopefully the version that Rogers is launching next week will resolve those, and while this is speculation, maybe it will even ship with Android 2.1! We should be getting a review unit from Rogers soon, so check back for a comprehensive hands-on.
